Support for Symantec NetBackup™ 6.5 Direct Copy

The DXi7500 is designed to protect sites with 15TB to more than 100TB of primary data, offering Enterprise capacity and performance, active-active HA architecture, integrated direct tape creation, and choice of data de-duplication methods based on user policy and data needs. It is designed to anchor an Enterprise-wide data protection strategy by consolidating operations from edge locations in a secure centralized resource that combines disk, tape, and replication.

One of the key DXi7500 features is its ability to integrate disk and tape data protection technologies with integrated tape creation that provides full support for NetBackup 6.5’s Direct Copy feature. The DXi7500 offers direct copying of virtual media to physical media in an attached tape library over a dedicated Fibre Channel connection. Data movement is powered by the DXi7500, but in systems using NetBackup 6.5’s Direct Copy module, the commands to carry out the operation are issued by the NetBackup media server and the location and barcode identities of all media are tracked by the NetBackup media management system. The diagram on the reverse side of this solution brief illustrates the operation.

Part of a comprehensive backup system. The DXi7500 is part of Quantum’s family of DXi-Series disk backup and remote replication systems. The DXi-Series systems extend the benefits of data de-duplication across the Enterprise, and integrate it with tape, replication, and encryption into a complete backup solution. Quantum’s patented data de-duplication reduces disk and network bandwidth requirements by 90% or more, lowering disk backup costs and making WAN replication a practical DR tool. The DXi-Series provides fast, reliable backups and restores, reduced media usage, and lower overall data protection costs.

1. NetBackup™ 6.5 Direct Copy will prepare the DXi7500 to copy data from it's virtual tape to a physical tape.
2. NetBackup™ 6.5 Direct Copy will mount the required tape cartridges, (a.) physical and (b.) virtual. NetBackup™ may do this by interacting directly with the physical and virtual media changers (shown) or through the DXi7500.
3. NetBackup™ 6.5 Direct Copy will select the DXi7500 that can provide access to the virtual drive and establish a session with it for the purpose of duplicating data between the drives.
4. The DXi7500 will copy all or part of the data from the virtual tape cartridge to the designated physical tape under the direction of NetBackup™ 6.5 Direct Copy.
5. A copy of the virtual tape is now on physical tape.
